Dream the Ride- Ride the Dream
South Africa is blessed with great natural beauty and unforgettable landscapes. There is no better place to start the tour than in laid back Cape Town, with iconic Table Mountain as our backdrop. Whether we choose to head north via the picturesque East or West Coast of South Africa - you won't be disappointed. (The East Coast option will take us through Swaziland, Mozambique and Malawi). Our route north takes us through the unique Namaqualand region and soon we reach the Orange river, the border with Namibia.
Namibia is a country full of contrasts, magnificent natural beauty and with some of the best gravel rides of the entire tour. On our way north we experience the grandeur of the Fish River Canyon, Namib Desert at Sossusvlei, German colonial culture in the town of Swakopmund, iconic Spitzkoppe Mountains and several other great destination before we swing due east through the lush Caprivi pan handle towards Zambia and the Victoria Falls.
Zambia : After a relaxing stay in Livingstone and exploring the Victoria Falls at leisure, we join the Great North Road for a relaxing ride through Zambia's beautiful countryside to the madness of the Tunduma border post with Tanzania.
Tanzania is an awesome country, blessed with great scenic beauty, wildlife and death defying bus drivers. We best stick to the lonely gravel roads for a fantastic adventure ride. With Arusha as our base, there is the opportunity to undertake a short, optional, safari into the unique Ngorogoro crater or Lake Manyara. Alternatively a short outride to Moshi to bask in the glory of Kilimanjaro before we continue north.
Kenya spells the halfway mark of our journey and we stop in Nairobi for a well deserved short break and basic maintenance to our bikes. In Nanyuki we cross the equator and steer towards Isiolo, on the edge of the Northern Wilderness. Believe it when you read this; the bumpy ride from Marsabit to Moyale will test your relationship with your motorcycle. Aaagh, but what a riding experience through the deep rural Samburu heartland to the border with Ethiopia.
Ethiopia is a country of great contrasts. As soon as we cross the border you will sense the different alphabet, calendar, coffee culture, food, people, religion and scenery. The ride towards Addis Abeba will take us through numerous luscious, small towns, the banana plantations of Dila and the Rastafarian heartland Shashemene. The ride from Addis Abeba through the Blue Nile Gorge to Bahir Dar on Lake Tana and source of the Blue Nile, is simply awesome. In historic Gonder we pay a visit to Africa’s very own “Sistine Chapel”, before venturing north towards Sudan. Very quickly we descend the Ethiopian high mountains to reach the warmer Sudanese desert plains.
Sudan : Our route north takes us to Gedaref and past Wad Medani where we meet up with the Blue Nile once more. From here the great river remains our constant companion until we reach Khartoum. In Khartoum, the modern day capital, we take a well-deserved 2 day break to relax and explore the confluence of the Blue and White Nile and experience Sudanese hospitality. With Egypt in our sights, we follow the Nile north to the ancient pyramids at Meroe, the historic center of the kingdom of Kush and then head through the Nubian Desert to reach the dusty old town of Wadi Halfa. An uncomfortable overnight cruise on an overcrowded ferry, down Lake Nasser, will take us to Aswan and Egypt.
Egypt : Once we have cleared Egypt's infamous customs and are reunited with our bikes, we ride north along the Nile to historic Luxor. A visit to the the magnificent Valley of the Kings before we swing east towards the Red Sea. Too soon we leave the tranquil Red Sea behind for the mad traffic chaos of bustling Cairo where we are greeted by great pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. 50 days and many unforgettable memories later we have arrived in Cairo!
